Carla Oliveira ( HDGC molecular genetics),
Fátima Carneiro ( Molecular Pathology),
Gianpaolo Suriano and Jose Carlos Machado ( Gastric cancer related signalling pathways)

Principal Investigators related to breast cancer research:
Joana Paredes (Signalling pathways related to breast cancer invasion),
Fernando Schmitt ( Molecular pathology),
Location of the Group (Host- Institution):
IPATIMUP, Porto, Portugal
General Objectives of the Group
The research of our group focuses on the genetics of three common types of epithelial cancer: gastric, breast, and colorectal carcinoma. We focus at identifying 1) germline genetic alterations (high and low penetrance genes) associated with increased risk of these tumours; 2) pathological features and somatic molecular markers occurring in the setting of hereditary and sporadic carcinomas; 3) signalling pathways mediated by genetic and gene-environmental factors in tumour development in order to find molecular targets for therapeutic intervention. Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer: Research update May 2009
Parry Guilford, Bostjan Humar, Helen More and Soroush Nasri; Cancer Genetics Laboratory, University of Otago
The lab has two HDGC research projects in progress at the moment. The first which is being carried out by Helen More in collaboration with our colleagues in Munich, Vancouver and New York, and funded by the New Zealand Health Research Council, aims to get a better understanding of the clinical importance of some fairly common variants in the CDH1 gene. Fleming’s Hosts Benefit Wine Tasting Event

Madison, WI
Dear Friends & Family,
I am thrilled to announce an event at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar in Madison, WI. The Fleming’s 100 Wine Tasting will benefit the Be Strong Hearted® campaign of our Chelcun Family Fund for Stomach Cancer Research. The cost to attend is $25 per person, of which ninety-five percent will benefit the fund.
I would love to see you there, and I hope you will extend this invitation to others you know who may enjoy the event. A summer day will provide the perfect opportunity to take advantage of their lovely outdoor patio area, too.
We extend much gratitude to Andy Tsigolis, the Operating Partner of Fleming’s Madison, for his generous support of our cause.
Kia Kaha,
Karen
www.BeStrongHearted.org continues to reach people worldwide who are just beginning to learn about hereditary gastric cancer. Affected families have expressed their thanks for our mission. Research is proceeding with wonderful personal contacts and commitments from key scientists. The scientists have shared their appreciation for our awareness and education efforts, and have said that “if you are having contacts from people around the world [and we are], then you are saving lives.” We appreciate your support, as it allows us to support and advance this very important research.
